Finshed reading- Punished

I forgot to publish my last post so it looks like I just wrote it today...be assured, I wrote it last week.  Last night, Matt joined Emma and Alex ( and Evan, Alex's brother) to discuss the book.  They each created a "sandwich" bookreport to summarize the book.  We all agreed Punished was a great book and we would highly recommend it to anyone!  I began to read aloud the next book, Soupy Saturaday's with the Pain and The Great One.  So far, I did not hear many complaints, which means they may enjoy this book too.  The kids can follow along or read on their own.  Each week we will continue to meet to read, discuss and do some "fun" stuff.  I look forward to see all of you next Wednesday.

Bare Bones summer time..

Tonight only Alex and Emma showed up for our discussion.  The kids talked about the Oxymorons they found in chapter five and six.  We decided, as mentioned at our last meeting we would all finish reading the book by July 7th.  I would like to read aloud the next book at each meeting.  I think we will start with Judy Blume's book.  Hope to see more of you next week...Lisa

We made bookmarks

Last night at our book club meeting we made bookworm bookmarks, discussed chapter 3 and 4 and decided we would read chapter 5 and 6 for next week. The kids figured out that the main character is called Logan Quest. A quest is a search for something. Logan was told to search for Oxymoron. I wonder what else he has to search for? We began talking about what book we would read next. I have a few ideas....It is my hope that I expose the children to books that they may not have read and will be enjoyed by all. Sometimes reading something "out of the box" opens doors for your imagination.

"Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One" by Judy Blume http://www.judyblume.com/books/chapter/soupy.php Check out this link...this is a series of books about a brother and sister (six and eight years old).

We are reading now...

With all the crazy storms looming in South Florida, we still met to discuss our book.  Way to be committed! The kids worked on Anagram puzzles, answered a few questions about the book to make sure we are all on the same "page" and we began to read the third chapter of the book.  I asked the kids to try to complete chapter four by the next meeting.  The kids seem to enjoy the challenge of the anagram puzzles and were able to discuss the puns they found in the book thus far.  I continue to be impressed with the level of concentration of these young children.  It has been a few years since I was in a classroom (teaching Middle School), but I can see the sillyness is still there.  This has become a challenge to me.  It is my hope that this week's activity will elimate the "silly feeding off each other" behaviors.  These children are all intelligent, creative, and passionate readers; I can't wait to see what they do next.  I hope to see you all this Wednesday at Borders.  Happy Reading!

First book club meeting

Last night our book club met at Borders book store from 7 - 8 pm.  The kids are beginning to build their background knowledge on Oxymorons, Puns and Anagrams.  We played a fun listening game about the Wright Family who Left on a vacation.  The kids are off and reading....they plan to read the first couple of chapters for our next meeting in two weeks.  I would like to challenge each child that reads this to find an Oxymoron in their daily lives.  Please post any oxymoron that you find to this blog. Feel free to post any thoughts you may have about the book or the book club.
We finished our night with yummy cupcakes and Birthday Cake frozen drink from The Cafe at Borders.
